Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Our first full week in Milwaukee, Wisconsin was a busy one! We visited four very different schools in the area: Shorewood High School, Bradley Tech High School, Escuela Verde, and Story School.

Our week began with some special guests including one of the four photographers featured in the exhibition: Ron Haviv (VII Foundation). Who accompanied us for the first two days at Shorewood and Bradley Tech, filming a short film he is making about the MVP bus tour. We were also joined by Elana Haviv (Generation Human Rights), and it was great getting to bounce ideas off them for a few days as we all interacted with the exhibition.

A sneak peak of some film stills from Ron Haviv!

Escuela Verde is a project-based school, where each student has the freedom to pick a project that they will work on as part of their curriculum, and decide how long they will work on that project for. Talking to them about the Millennium Villages Project was a fascinating opportunity, and their insights and questions will stick with us for the remainder of the tour. They understood the process behind taking on a huge project like MVP. We could really dive into the goals with them.

Our week commenced at Story School, where we visited some of our youngest students yet! We had one class of third graders and a few classes of fourth, fifth, sixth graders. While some of the subject matter needed to be simplified (and a little extra time had to be spent getting them to focus) it was wonderful getting them to introduce them to some of the underlying ideas around sustainability and helping out in their own communities. We talked to them about the goals and how the Millenium Villages Project aimed to make people’s lives better. They loved flipping the photographs and watching the videos!

Our trusty old bus is at the shop this weekend for a checkup before our long trek to the Southwest.
